Willem Landman

Willem A Landman was the founding CEO of the Ethics Institute of South Africa (EthicsSA) (2000-2010). Currently he serves as Executive Director of EthicsSA and, since 2000, as professor extraordinaire of philosophy at the University of Stellenbosch. Landman holds degrees from the Universities of Stellenbosch, Oxford (where he was a South Africa-at-Large Rhodes Scholar) and South Africa (Unisa) in philosophy, political philosophy, theology and law. During the period 1986 to 1994, he was professor and chair of the philosophy department at the University of Western Cape. He then held a professorship in medical humanities in the Body School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina (1994–2000). In 2007, he co-edited the book The Bioethics reader: Editors' choice; in addition, he co-founded and co-edited the international journal Developing World Bioethics. Apart from writing a monthly ethics opinion piece for Sake24, Landman has also served on several journal editorial boards as well as company ethics boards, including Discovery Health, Momentum Life and Primecure. He chairs the Ethics Board of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Southern Africa, and he chaired the Ethics Committee (a subcommittee of the Sustainability Committee) of the King Committee on Governance for South Africa (2007-2009). He served as Council member of the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa (2003–2009) and acts as Ethics advisor to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria based in Geneva, Switzerland.
